    Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Vodder style) is a light pressure, no-oil treatment that has been developed to stimulate and increase the flow and pumping of your lymphatic system. The skin is stretched and released in a rhythmic, alternating sequence.

The benefits of MLD include clearing extra fluid and congestion, reducing swelling, improving healing and immune system functioning.

Some conditions that can benefit from MLD are: sinus congestion, post-surgical or acute injury swelling, sluggish immune system, anxiety, bloating, long COVID symptoms, whiplash, concussion syndromes, migraines, bruising and more.

NOTE: This is NOT Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage, which is a different style of treatment.

  • A hand being bandaged in layers of compressive bandaging with white padding and a beige bandage

    Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

This treatment combines Manual Lymphatic Drainage with Compressive Bandaging in order to manage conditions of impaired lymphatic function (lymphedema).

This type of therapy has two stages: an intensive phase, in which frequent MLD is combined with compressive short-stretch bandaging to manage swelling and reduce limb volume and a maintenance phase, in which MLD is used regularly while the patient wears a graduated compression garment such as a sleeve or sock to control the swelling.

This treatment is the gold standard for lymphedema treatment and can help prevent complications such as infections, skin breakdown and progression of the condition.

  • A massage therapist leaning their elbow into a patient's upper back while they are face down, with an artificial plant background

    Swedish Massage Therapy

This is what most people think of, when they think of massage therapy. An oil, lotion or cream is used in a gliding treatment with differing levels of pressure in order to soften tissues, improve functioning, and reduce pain and dysfunction.

A thorough assessment is included in your visit, in order to best address your treatment needs.

This treatment approach can include joint play, stretching, active release and remedial exercise prescriptions.

I often use Myofascial Release as well, which are techniques with no oil used, targeting the layers of connective tissue (fascia) that wrap around your muscles and other tissues.

  • A massage therapist's hand holding one of four clear silicone cups that are suctioned to a patient's back

    Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy uses silicone or plastic vacuum cups that are placed on the skin with varying levels of suction. The therapist can glide the cup on the skin or leave it in one spot for a while.

This therapy uses the vacuum in the cup to create a lift in the tissues, lift the layers of the skin and fascia (connective tissue) and mobilize them.

When performed by an RMT, this therapy is combined with Swedish Massage in order to improve treatment outcomes and can be used for a variety of conditions.

Some applications of cupping include: congestion, scars, fascial restrictions, tension, injuries (non-acute) and post-surgical restrictions (once incisions are closed).
